Retiree Charged with DUI After Wife’s Fatal Golf Cart Accident
A former diner owner from Queens is facing charges for driving under the influence after his wife tragically died in a golf cart accident in Florida late last month.
Angelo Theodosiou, aged 64, and his wife Christina, 58, were navigating through Nocatee, a coastal community in Florida, on November 30 when disaster struck.
Around 10:45 PM that evening, Christina fell from their golf cart and hit her head on the pavement. She was taken to a local hospital but sadly passed away the following day, according to an arrest report.
Police noted that Angelo’s eyes were bloodshot and watery, and there was a distinct smell of alcohol on him, even from some distance away. This raised concerns for the investigating officers.
Overcome with emotion at the scene, Angelo declined to take a field sobriety test and also chose not to complete a breathalyzer exam, as stated in the report.
The next day, he appeared to be confused, repeatedly asking questions about the incident and why he was being taken into custody.
His attorney, L. Lee Lockett, mentioned that Angelo was heartbroken over his wife’s death and insisted that he was not impaired during the incident, entering a plea of not guilty.
“He’s devastated. It’s a heavy burden to bear,” Lockett commented.
Facing charges of driving under the influence and refusing to comply with police requests, Angelo was released on bond the day after his arrest.
Residents in the area expressed concern about a newly opened greenway that they believe could lead to accidents due to increased congestion. Some even recalled witnessing a close call between a golf cart and an electric bicycle recently.
Before this incident, Angelo owned the Jackson House Restaurant in Jackson Heights, Queens. He and his brother have maintained the restaurant, prioritizing a familial atmosphere for customers.
When he retired and relocated to Florida remains unclear.
