Packers Defeat Bears in NFC North Showdown
The head coaches of the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears, Matt LaFleur and Ben Johnson, likely won’t be sharing any beverages anytime soon. Following the Packers’ 28-21 victory, which secured them first place in the NFC North, the two coaches exchanged a brief handshake on the field.
This exchange took place shortly after Johnson, during his first press conference, had some pointed remarks about the Packers. LaFleur, while seemingly unfazed by the rivalry’s escalation, appeared to relish in the win on Sunday.
The handshake wasn’t the most memorable moment; they didn’t say much during the encounter. A video captured them passing each other with polite smiles and a quick shake. However, post-game footage showed LaFleur celebrating enthusiastically as he jogged off the field, pumping his fist and even jumping in excitement.
Afterward, he turned his attention to the fans, cheering them on in the tunnel, which added to the celebratory atmosphere. When asked about his personal feelings regarding the win, he downplayed it, reflecting the typical rivalry spirit.
“Absolutely not. Packers vs. Bears,” he responded, when queried if he derived satisfaction from the victory.
LaFleur described their encounter as “quick” and, with a nod to the future, stated, “We’ll see you again in two weeks.” The Packers and Bears are set to meet again in Week 16, this time in Chicago.
Johnson’s earlier comments at his introductory press conference also added an intriguing backdrop. Having been an assistant with the Lions for six years, he expressed respect for the NFC North landscape, noting, “I’ve been competing with them for the last six years.” He highlighted the importance of this rivalry, mentioning LaFleur specifically, saying he faced him “twice a year.”
Now, after this latest game, it seems Johnson will have to wait until possibly 2026 to secure another win over his rival coach LaFleur.
