Tragic Hunting Accident Claims Life of Louisiana Father

A Louisiana father, described as having a “heart of gold,” was tragically shot and killed during a hunting trip.

Garrett Berdan, 45, was fatally struck in the head by a bullet from a hunting rifle that accidentally went off while he and friends were hunting in Lafourche Parish around 4 p.m. According to reports, a hunting partner shared that he was en route to a hunting spot, navigating through a herd of cattle, when Berdan handed him a rifle, which unexpectedly discharged, hitting him with a .308 caliber bullet.

Officials confirmed that Berdan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities indicated that the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is joining the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office in the ongoing investigation, and all parties involved are cooperating with detectives.

In the wake of her father’s death, his devastated daughter, Chloe Verdun, paid heartfelt tribute to her “role model.” The 19-year-old took to Facebook, expressing her sorrow: “I wish more than anything I’d never post this, but I’m so happy to have shared 19 years with you. I love you forever, Dad, and always will.”

She added, “You will forever be my role model and my favorite person. Until we meet again, I will forever be your love bug.”

Sources indicate Berdan, a father of two, will be remembered as someone who was always willing to help others and provide comfort. An online obituary noted that “his life was too short, but rich in deep relationships and an endless capacity for love.” The joy of his life was undoubtedly spending time with his children, Chloe and Ethan, as well as sharing moments with his fiancée, Tiffany Hunter, and many friends and family.

Berdan was an avid outdoorsman, a skilled craftsman who loved carpentry, but most importantly, his family came first. His passing will be deeply felt by all who knew him, his radiant smile leaving a lasting impression.

The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Berdan’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization dedicated to supporting disabled veterans.

Garrett Verdun is survived by his fiancée, daughter, and son, Ethan Verdun.

Following this incident, the LDWF released a safety advisory to hunters, emphasizing the importance of unloading firearms and ensuring safeties are engaged when moving to and from hunting locations.
