Chiefs Coach Takes Blame for Loss
After a tough 20-10 home loss to the Texans, Chiefs coach Andy Reid openly acknowledged that he “ruined it.” He took full accountability for a pivotal late-game call on fourth down that shifted momentum towards Houston.
“I take full responsibility for that,” Reid mentioned, reflecting on the moment.
The incident happened in the fourth quarter, with Kansas City deciding to attempt a fourth-and-one play from their own 31-yard line, aiming to tie the score at 10.
However, a pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes intended for wide receiver Laci Rice was incomplete, setting the stage for the Texans to seize the moment and score shortly after.
Houston subsequently took a 17-10 lead and never let go.
This loss marked a difficult setback for Reid and the Chiefs, who are now fighting for their 10th consecutive AFC West title. Looking back, Reid confessed that, while he was “confident” in his team’s ability to execute that play, he realized, “in hindsight, it was a mistake.”
“I thought we could win,” Reid said. “We were confident we could do it. It was important to take advantage of the opportunity, and we thought it was an opportunity. In hindsight, I was wrong. I was wrong. We were pretty good on fourth down. I messed it up.”
It was a challenging night for Mahomes, too, as he threw three interceptions and failed to score any touchdowns. Plus, star tight end Travis Kelce had a significant drop when a pass from Mahomes landed in the hands of Texans linebacker Azeez Al Shaair.
With this victory, Houston advanced to 8-5, while the Chiefs slipped to 6-7, leaving them with a mere 15 percent chance of making it to the playoffs if the season ended today.
“We still have a chance. It’s a small chance, but we have a chance,” said Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones. “For us, the door is still open. It could be a 10 percent chance. It could be a 5 percent chance. But as long as there is an opportunity, we can control it and let the cards fall where they fall.”
The Chiefs will finish the regular season facing off against the Chargers, Titans, Broncos, and Raiders.
