Indiana’s Quarterback Celebrates Championship Win

Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback who had the most remarkable season in Indiana football history, shared on national television that belief played a crucial role in his achievements. In Indiana University’s recent game against Ohio State, Mendoza threw for 222 yards and a touchdown, leading the Hoosiers to a 13-10 victory. This win marked the school’s first Big Ten football championship since 1966 and pushed them to the top spot in all major polls for the very first time.

With an undefeated record of 13-0, Indiana is set to enter the College Football Playoff, and Mendoza has emerged as a strong contender for the Heisman Trophy, which recognizes the top college football player.

In the excitement of the moment, Mendoza expressed, “I want to give all the glory to God. We were never supposed to be in this position, but thanks to great coaches, amazing teammates, and everyone around us, we managed to achieve this.” His post-game interview was filled with enthusiasm, sparking joy among fans. “Who would have thought the Hoosiers would make it this far? But here we are, champions!”

Earlier this season, he mentioned in an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show that weekly Bible studies have helped strengthen bonds among the team. “It’s great to be part of this. We try to have team dinners every Thursday, along with Bible studies. It creates a real sense of brotherhood among us,” he observed.

Coming out of high school, Mendoza was relatively unknown. However, after signing with Cal and later transferring to Indiana, he flourished under head coach Curt Cinetti. Reflecting on his journey, he recalled how, after not receiving any offers, his mother encouraged him to keep faith. “She always reminded me, ‘Keep praying; things will work out.’ Everything she said has come true,” Mendoza shared, adding that his mother, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, is a significant source of inspiration for him.

“Seeing her fight through multiple sclerosis is motivating. On days when I feel down, or even after a tough practice, I remind myself that I have no excuses. She’s my motivation,” he said.

Looking ahead, Indiana will compete in the Rose Bowl on January 1, facing the victor of the matchup between Alabama and Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
