Zohran Mamdani Advises Undocumented Immigrants in New York City on How to Confront ICE Agents

New Mayor-elect Encourages Immigrants to Stand Up to ICE

The newly elected Democratic Socialist Mayor of New York City, Zoran Mamdani, is advising undocumented immigrants on how to deal with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (ICE) agents.

This development occurs against the backdrop of the Trump administration’s efforts to safeguard American communities by targeting serious criminal offenses attributed to undocumented individuals.

In a video released on Sunday, Mamdani discussed ICE’s recent activities in Chinatown and emphasized that he intends to uphold the rights of all New Yorkers when he officially takes office. He expressed that this commitment extends to over 3 million immigrants residing in the city, stating that everyone can assert their rights against ICE actions.

“ICE cannot enter private areas, like homes, schools, or workplaces, without a judicial warrant issued by a judge,” he informed viewers, highlighting that residents have the right to keep their doors shut.

Mamdani noted, “ICE is legally permitted to deceive you. However, you retain the right to remain silent. If detained, you can continuously inquire if you are free to leave.” He added that it’s essential to stay calm during encounters with law enforcement, avoid fleeing, and not obstruct any investigations.

In a previous interaction with President Trump, Mamdani reaffirmed New York City’s status as a sanctuary city, communicating that the city adheres to its own laws, which enable local authorities to connect with the federal government regarding approximately 170 serious offenses.

He expressed further concerns about how many New Yorkers are detained and deported for missing court appearances, pledging to prioritize the protection of immigrants in the city.

Prior to his election, Mamdani, who labels himself a socialist, had promised to assist undocumented inmates in evading ICE and to confront ICE agents directly. He criticized the agency during a mayoral debate, arguing that it shows little respect for the law or the communities it purports to serve.
