Reality Check from South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace

Representative Nancy Mace from South Carolina recently took a stand, voicing her frustrations about the leadership within the Republican Party in Congress.

In a recent op-ed published in the New York Times, Mace critiqued the GOP’s direction, specifically targeting Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana.

“Here’s the hard truth Republicans don’t want to hear,” she stated.

While Mace acknowledged that Johnson is an improvement over former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy—whom she helped oust in 2023—she suggested that top leadership is often found across the aisle rather than within their own party.

“Speaker Mike Johnson is better than his predecessor,” Mace noted. “However, being a regular member can be frustrating, especially when certain voices within the party feel sidelined.”

Mace pointed out that the party often overlooks the contributions of women in leadership roles, suggesting that the conference chair position is merely a symbolic role rather than one of real influence.

“Women will never be taken seriously until leadership decides to take us seriously. I can’t keep waiting,” she said. “Since 2013, the Republican Conference chairpersonship has been held by a woman, but it’s just a token position, meant to spotlight the top woman while the real power lies elsewhere.”

Mace specifically mentioned former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as someone whose leadership she greatly respects, stating her approach was more effective than what is often seen in the Republican Party.

“Here’s the reality Republicans may not want to confront: Nancy Pelosi has been the most effective Speaker of the House, far surpassing any Republican this century,” she said. “I often disagree with her, but she knew something we seemed to have forgotten—that a majority isn’t something to take for granted.”

Continuing, Mace explained that when Democrats hold power, they push for their strongest policies, staying true to their coalition. “On the other hand, it feels like we’re faltering by only passing the most moderate policies that some within our party reluctantly accept,” she remarked.

“Pelosi was relentless, yet she accomplished what she set out to do.”
