New York Mayor-elect Appoints Formerly Incarcerated Rapper to Transition Team

Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani has named rapper Misonne Linen to his City Hall transition team as he prepares for his inauguration on January 1 in New York City. This appointment, which is drawing attention, aligns with Mamdani’s progressive campaign promises following his election in November.

The announcement highlighting Linen’s role was made on November 26 through social media by Until Freedom, a social justice group led by Linen. In the post, members expressed pride that their leaders would contribute to Mamdani’s transition, particularly in the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committees.

Linen, 49, has established himself as a community activist focusing on anti-violence efforts and participation in civic activism. His previous convictions include multiple counts of armed robbery from the late 1990s. Notably, he served seven years in prison following a jury conviction for robbing taxi drivers. Reports indicate that in one incident, he attacked a driver with a beer bottle, and in another, he held a driver at gunpoint to steal cash and valuables.

Linen’s defense team suggested that his music career, including work with notable artists, presented no motive for such crimes, claiming he was falsely accused. Ultimately, he received a sentence that could have spanned up to 25 years.

Despite being a controversial choice, Mamdani’s decision has sparked debates within the community, especially given Linen’s background. Critics have voiced concerns regarding appointing someone with a criminal history to influence public safety policies. However, Linen and his supporters strive to emphasize a new approach to community safety and justice reform.

With the transition team forming, Mamdani and Linen are set to make a mark in reshaping policies and addressing systemic issues in the city. In a recent post, Linen stated, “We are building something different,” reflecting the ideals both he and Mamdani hope to achieve in their governance.
