Socialist who labeled the US 'a disgrace' wins against Democratic incumbent in NYC

Controversial Socialist Ousts Incumbent in New York Congressional Race

A socialist candidate, who once described America as a “terrible disgrace,” has successfully defeated the five-term Democratic incumbent in New York’s 13th Congressional District. Daria Riza Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old community organizer with a degree from Columbia University, is backed by New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani. She is known for her left-wing activism and was part of a group focused on divesting from apartheid-related investments at Columbia University, which controversially posted “Death to America” on social media.

Avila Chevalier managed to beat Congressman Adriano Espaillat on Tuesday. Despite being more left-leaning than other strong progressives, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, she faces criticism for her views on private property, borders, and policing, as well as her advocacy for nationalizing significant portions of the private sector in previous statements from 2018 to 2022.

In a 2021 message, she claimed that abolishing borders, prisons, and police is “possible, necessary, and the only moral way to go,” which, understandably, raised eyebrows. Some have strongly disagreed, interpreting her words as advocating for border abolition.

Avila Chevalier made headlines for saying, “This country is an utter disgrace,” which seems to resonate with her supporters. She also mentioned a rather awkward incident about wiping her hands on an American flag, which stirred further debate. Most notably, she has called former President Biden a “rapist” and “war criminal,” as well as criticized Sanders for what she termed “liberal Zionism.” Yet, despite these controversial comments, Mamdani’s backing and a more progressive electorate in New York helped her secure the Democratic nomination.

During a debate with Espaillat, who has his own immigration story, Avila Chevalier emphasized that illegal immigrants should not face deportation, even after committing violent offenses. Her previous comments have also evoked criticisms, such as her remarks on racial dynamics and gender.

Even with her history of contentious statements, Mamdani has remained a staunch supporter, believing her views are evolving. “I haven’t seen any tweets like that,” he said, focusing on her advocacy for marginalized groups and those unjustly detained by ICE. He expressed confidence that she would effectively represent the community, particularly in addressing common concerns such as eviction fears.

The 13th District covers parts of Upper Manhattan and the West Bronx. Notably, there has never been a Republican elected in this district, positioning Avila Chevalier as a likely favorite in the upcoming November general election following her nomination.
