Herbert’s Postgame Reaction Raises Eyebrows
After the Chargers clinched a thrilling 22-19 overtime victory against the Eagles on “Monday Night Football,” Justin Herbert seemed less than enthusiastic about participating in a postgame interview.
Right after the game, Herbert expressed a desire to celebrate with his teammates rather than engage with Laura Rutledge from ESPN, stating, “Yeah, I’m trying to celebrate with the team,” while sidestepping the reporter.
Rutledge, undeterred, pressed on, asking, “No, I know, but can I talk to you right away?”
Throughout the interview, ESPN commentator Joe Buck picked up on Herbert’s dissatisfaction, commenting on his terse responses and body language. “Okay, now he can go celebrate with his teammates. Thank you, Laura. Well done,” Buck remarked as the interview concluded.
This awkward exchange quickly sparked discussions online, with many surprised that Herbert appeared reluctant to discuss his significant contribution to the team’s win.
Under the collective bargaining agreement, players, including Herbert, are obligated to speak with the media following games, which includes sideline interviews.
Some commentators, like Texas Fox7 anchor Alec Nolan, expressed disapproval of Herbert’s demeanor, noting, “I’m sorry that Justin Herbert was so rude to ESPN’s Laura Rutledge,” while emphasizing the importance of being the quarterback during major victories. Others, however, felt Herbert deserved a moment to relish the win before facing the media.
ESPN colleague Lindsey Tilley added her perspective, saying, “You’re a PRO!!!” via social media.
The game itself was intense, with the Eagles coming close several times to snagging the win. A late-game field goal tied the score, leading to overtime, but the Eagles ultimately fell short when Jalen Hurts threw a costly interception while trying to make a play.
This mishap, coupled with Hurts’ four interceptions during the game, puts the Eagles in a precarious position as they gear up for a crucial matchup against the struggling Raiders in Week 14. Meanwhile, the Chargers are looking strong with the No. 5 seed in the AFC and a showdown against the Chiefs next week on the horizon.
