Brendan Fraser shares the physical challenges he encountered at the start of his career

Brendan Fraser Discusses Career Pressures and Resilience

In a recent interview, actor Brendan Fraser shared the intense pressure he experienced while trying to maintain a physique typical of movie stars in his early career, admitting that he often pushed himself to the brink.

Fraser, now 57, kicked off his career in the early 1990s, leveraging his muscular build in various roles, starting with Encino Man, where he portrayed a caveman in modern-day Los Angeles.

His performances in films such as George of the Jungle and the Mummy series established him as a prominent figure in action-comedy.

However, during a conversation with fellow actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Fraser revealed that his health began to decline as he neared 40. He reflected on this period, saying, “Things started to fall apart around 2007, 2008, 2009. I was filming in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, doing a low-budget job that involved a lot of physical activity, and it took its toll.”

Fraser recounted feeling the effects of pain and injuries while filming, though he tried to ignore them. “After the movie wrapped up, I thought, ‘I’m getting too old for this.’ I realized that this lifestyle was catching up to me. If I wanted to keep acting, I had to seriously reflect on why I was putting myself through this,” he admitted.

Despite the discomfort, he often approached acting with the thought that pain was a necessary part of his income. It’s interesting how, perhaps, he felt a sort of twisted correlation between suffering and success.

Fraser’s Hollywood journey became more challenging in the late 1990s as blockbuster opportunities diminished, leading to a string of box office flops.

In 2018, he revealed that a disturbing incident in 2003, where he claimed he was sexually assaulted by Philip Burke, then president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, had a lasting impact on him. Burke dismissed Fraser’s account as entirely fabricated.

Fraser mentioned that this incident led him to retreat from the limelight, saying he felt “depressed” and “miserable,” often blaming himself for what had occurred.

Despite these struggles, Fraser has experienced a revival in his career, with roles in films like Sudden Movements Are Prohibited (2021) by Steven Soderbergh and Murderers of the Flower Moon (2023) by Martin Scorsese.

His performance in The Whale (2022), directed by Darren Aronofsky, earned him significant acclaim, including an Academy Award for Best Actor.

During his Oscar acceptance speech, Fraser touched on the adversities he faced throughout his career and his unexpected resurgence in the industry. “I started this business 30 years ago, and while it wasn’t easy, we took for granted the comforts we had until they were gone,” he reflected.
