Conspiracy Theories in Sports Gambling
There’s a lot of talk these days about how conspiracy theories are ruining political conversations. It seems like, well, everything is labeled a conspiracy. It’s fascinating, really—perhaps even a bit concerning. The internet has fueled this mindset, and now it’s starting to seep into sports, particularly in sports betting, which feels a bit alarming.
Take last weekend, for instance. Dave Portnoy had one of his classic social media outbursts after losing a bet on the Broncos vs. Raiders game. Now, Portnoy is known for being a bit over-the-top, and it can be tricky to tell when he’s serious versus when he’s just joking around. His rants often blur that line. Regardless, his frustration seemed directed at the Raiders during the game’s final moments. With less than a minute left, they were down 24-14 but still decided to push forward instead of letting the clock run down.
This move likely didn’t sit well with bettors who were banking on the Broncos to cover the spread, which was set between 7.5 and 8.5 points, or those looking to hit an over/under of 40.5.
The tension peaked for Portnoy when a delay of game penalty was called against the Raiders’ defense. Safety Brandon Jones had taken down Tyler Lockett after a significant catch, setting the Raiders up at Denver’s 33-yard line. Portnoy quickly suggested punitive actions against NFL referees and, somewhat dramatically, even called for the head coach of the Raiders, Pete Carroll, to face serious consequences.
The Raiders added a field goal towards the end, tightening the score to 24-17.
Portnoy wasn’t isolated in his sentiments. Many NFL fans began to echo the thought that the league had manipulated the outcome, almost as if on-field officials were being influenced by someone in Las Vegas.
It’s a natural human tendency to connect the dots in ways that make sense, especially when we are faced with unpredictability and chaos. But it’s essential to remember that not everything can—or should—be viewed through a conspiracy lens. Sometimes things really are just random.
The emotional stakes of placing hefty bets can be overpowering. When there’s a chance of significant loss, it’s easy to shift the blame to factors outside our control. Yet, we rarely hold ourselves accountable for the decision to place those bets initially.
I’ll admit, I’ve found myself grumbling about referees or pointing fingers at conspiracy theories when my favorite team is underperforming. It can be pretty tough to resist that impulse, especially when it feels like a call was undeniably wrong.
And honestly, betting on sports amplifies that frustration tenfold.
