Vikings players share encouraging words from their coach

The Minnesota Vikings’ 2025 season isn’t going as they hoped, especially after a remarkable 14-3 record last year. As they approached Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders, the Vikings faced a disheartening four-game losing streak, sitting at 4-8 and with playoff dreams fading fast. Yet, by the end of the matchup at U.S. Bank Stadium, the scoreboard read 31-0 in favor of the Vikings, evoking memories of their powerful preseason performance.

A motivating pregame speech from head coach Kevin O’Connell seemed to play a key role in this comeback. Defensive captain Harrison Smith, quite emotional afterward, emphasized the team’s potential to have fun despite their tough situation.

O’Connell encouraged the players to remember their high school days, a time when playing in the NFL felt like just a dream. This message resonated, particularly with defenders like Josh Metellus and Andrew Van Ginkel, who contributed notably in the game.

After the victory, Metellus reflected on O’Connell’s words, recalling his own experiences as a 16-year-old without recruitment offers at Charles W. Flanagan High School. He felt that understanding his journey was an important part of reaching success. Every Friday night, he would remind himself of the efforts needed to chase his dreams. It’s as if he could visualize himself where he is now, inspired by the success stories around him.

Similarly, Van Ginkel connected the coach’s message to his own past in Iowa, reminding him of the dreams every kid has. He appreciated the chance to compete against notable quarterback Jaden Daniels, considering participation in the NFL a special opportunity that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

While the Vikings sit at 5-8, their playoff hopes may be slim, yet the focus remains on enjoying every moment. O’Connell’s reminder about the fleeting nature of NFL careers hit home, as Smith expressed the emotional weight of each game remaining. They are determined to play as if each outing could be their last.

Meanwhile, both Metellus and Van Ginkel participated in a charitable event in Minneapolis, helping to give away bikes to children through Raising Cane’s initiative. This year’s giveaway surpassed last year’s total, with more than 4,000 bikes distributed across the nation.

Van Ginkel shared his excitement over seeing the joy on children’s faces, and the significance of giving back, especially during the holiday season. Metellus echoed these sentiments, appreciating the opportunity to support the community and foster a sense of care and connection.
