Trump Dismisses Somali Immigrants Married to Their Siblings

Trump’s Remarks on Ilhan Omar During Interview

In a recent conversation with Politico’s Dasha Burns, President Trump made remarks that targeted Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota), who has been linked to accusations regarding her marriage to a family member.

The discussion began when Trump praised the success of the Venezuelan immigrant community in Doral, Florida. Burns followed up with a question about whether those are the types of immigrants he supports coming to the U.S.

Trump initially agreed but then shifted gears, indicating there are certain individuals he does not want in the country. Without mentioning Omar’s name, he criticized her as a Somali immigrant.

“Well, they… well. [Venezuelans] Yes, I want to meet people who contribute,” he stated.

However, he quickly added:

I don’t want to see Somalia. I don’t want to see a woman marry her brother, become a member of parliament, and complain all the time. All she does is complain, complain, complain, and yet her country is a mess. You know, it’s, uh, one of the worst in the world. Oh, let her go back and rebuild her country.

The controversies surrounding Omar’s marriage to her brother have been well-documented.

Reports indicate that she was allowed to immigrate to the United States as a P-3 refugee in the mid-1990s, which necessitated a connection to someone already in the U.S. as a resettled refugee.

Omar claimed to be part of the “Omar” family, which had already settled in the U.S., to gain entrance here.

However, it was later found that the P-3 program had significant issues with fraud. The program was ultimately ended under the Bush administration after it was revealed that many Somalis had provided false information about their relationships to gain entry into the U.S. Consequently, DNA testing for verifying relationships was instituted.

It became clear that around 87 percent of those who sought P-3 status had misrepresented their relationships.

The administration expressed concerns that terrorists might exploit the program for entry into the U.S.

Many rumors have swirled regarding Omar’s immigration status and marriages, which led to an FBI investigation in 2020 about whether she married a sibling to secure her immigration status. Ultimately, it was inconclusive whether she had indeed engaged in such illegal activity.

In November, Trump reiterated that if Omar did exploit U.S. immigration laws by marrying her brother, she should face deportation.
