Maddie & Tay Announce Hiatus but Remain Friends
The country music duo, Maddie & Tay, has decided to take a break from making music together, although they want fans to know they are not breaking up permanently. In a recent chat, Maddie Marlowe Font and Tay Dai Karr talked about stepping back from their duo activities, emphasizing that it’s not the end.
Font mentioned, “We’re leaving this open-ended because one day we might make another record. Maybe we’ll do a tour date someday.” The pair first crossed paths in 2010 and hit the charts with their debut single “Girl in a Country Song,” which went number one in 2014. Over the years, they’ve put out four albums and four EPs, earning nominations for 13 CMA Awards, 11 ACM Awards, and 6 CMT Awards.
Tay expressed that he plans to shift focus to his family during this time, while Maddie is looking into a solo career. Tay, who has two kids—daughter Leighton, 3, and son Chapel, 13 months—with his wife Josh Kerr, and Maddie, who shares a son named Forrest, 2, with her husband Jonah Font, both reflected on their journeys as mothers.
Font shared, “Even though we’re not going to be on this journey together as Maddie and Tay, we’re still walking together in life.” They aim to maintain their friendship and support each other, which feels important as they juggle parenting responsibilities.
In discussing the hiatus, Tae found it hard to say goodbye to the duo, admitting that music was his lifelong dream. Yet, he acknowledged, “life changes” and that family needs often take precedence. Maddie echoed these sentiments, noting the beauty and difficulty of motherhood and expressing admiration for options available to women, whether embracing the role of a stay-at-home mom or balancing work and family.
Regarding her solo aspirations, Maddie quipped about her passion for music being a never-ending flame. She also appreciated her husband’s choice to support her career. The duo shared a joint announcement about their hiatus, with fans reacting with sadness but also understanding the decision.
Comments from fans reflected a mix of disappointment and support, with many recognizing the necessity of this change in their lives. “So sad, I loved them together! True friendship,” one commented, highlighting the emotional connection fans have with the duo.
