Determined Islanders overcome Golden Knights in shootout

Islanders’ Late Surge Secures Victory Over Golden Knights

The Islanders delivered a much-needed offensive boost at just the right moment. Emil Heineman’s shootout-winning goal secured a thrilling 5-4 victory against the Golden Knights at UBS, marking a significant comeback from an early 2-0 deficit, possibly overshadowing the impact of Jean-Gabriel Pageau’s return.

Interestingly, Pageau’s new line featuring Matt Barzal and Anders Lee didn’t register any scores, but that shouldn’t detract from their efforts.

Bo Horvat stood out with two goals, marking his best performance in some time. Furthermore, Simon Holmstrom snapped a 14-game scoring slump, and the fourth line made notable contributions throughout the night.

Matthew Schaefer also returned to the ice after a challenging weekend in Florida, showcasing his skills and creating opportunities.

Despite Pavel Dorofeev’s tying goal with less than a minute left in regulation that sent the game into overtime, the Islanders displayed commendable resilience.

It wasn’t just Ilya Sorokin against the world, as had been the case in previous games. Sorokin faced some early struggles with rebound control, much like the team itself, but they rose to the challenge.

The Knights didn’t make it easy for the Islanders, with Ivan Barbashev scoring shortly after the Islanders had gone up 3-2.

Just two games post Cal Ritchie’s power-play winner in Tampa, the five-man unit, previously rated 30th in the league, pulled off another impressive play.

Following Dorofeev’s assist to Anthony Duclair for his third goal, the Islanders pressured Carter Hart’s crease, with Horvat finding the net and Barzal firing in his second goal of the night shortly thereafter.

Things got tense when Adam Pelech was penalized with 2:21 left on the clock. The Islanders had been under pressure since taking the lead, which put the focus on Sorokin and the penalty kill.

Sorokin made a key save in an unsteady start, but his efforts fell short when Dorofeev scored with just 12 seconds remaining, leveling the score at 5-5.

Overtime saw heightened expectations following a late call on Kyle MacLean for a high stick. However, the Islanders held their ground and Sorokin excelled in the shootout against Hart.

Horvat, who had struggled to find his rhythm recently, helped boost the Islanders by converting a one-timer to lessen Las Vegas’ lead earlier in the game.

Max Tsyplakov stepped in for Pageau as a strategic move, leading to a pivotal equalizer courtesy of Marc Gacom and Casey Cizikas.

A few minutes later, Cal Ritchie assisted Simon Holmstrom, who deftly took the lead with a wrist shot amidst traffic.

By that time, Sorokin had regained his composure, with critical saves throughout the final two periods, though he did concede some vulnerabilities in the first period.

Recently, it seems the Islanders required almost flawless goaltending to secure victories. Perhaps the positive takeaway from Tuesday’s game was not just the win but also the upbeat spirit of the team.
