Baseball Hall of Fame chair responds to Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds not being elected

Clemens and Bonds Miss Induction Again

Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds recently faced their last opportunity to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame, but they fell short once more. During the latest voting by the Modern Era Committee, members opted to induct former San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros star Jeff Kent instead.

Chairman of the Hall of Fame, Jane Forbes Clark, commented on the outcome, suggesting that the committee’s views on steroid-era players align closely with those of baseball writers. “I’m not surprised,” she noted, indicating that there had likely been discussions among writers, many of whom sit on the committee.

Bonds has continuously denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs throughout his career, while Clemens has also maintained that he never used PEDs. Notably, Donald Trump had shown support for Clemens prior to the committee’s vote.

The Hall of Fame’s new guidelines state that any nominee receiving fewer than five votes from the 16-member committee will be ineligible to be voted on by that committee for a span of three years. Therefore, if Clemens and Bonds don’t receive at least five votes should they appear again in 2031, they would be ineligible for future voting unless the rules are altered.

Clark emphasized a positive aspect of this situation, noting that it clears the way for other candidates to be considered during this period. “This opens up the ballots for others,” she remarked. “It’s beneficial for them to have a chance.”
