Former Senator Mitt Romney’s Sister-in-Law Dies by Suicide

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office confirmed on Tuesday that the death of former Senator Mitt Romney’s sister-in-law was a suicide. Carrie Elizabeth Romney, aged 64, tragically fell from a five-story parking garage in California earlier this month, suffering from “blunt force trauma” as a result.

She had been married to Mitt Romney’s older brother, George Scott Romney, who is 81. However, their marriage had encountered difficulties, leading to a months-long divorce process that began in early June.

Reacting to the loss, Mitt Romney expressed in a statement, “Our family is heartbroken by the loss of a woman who brought so much warmth and love to our lives.” He also requested privacy for the family during this challenging period.

The couple had wed in 2016 but had been living separately since late May, shortly before George filed for divorce.

Romney’s Future in Public Service

Mitt Romney, who served in the Utah State Senate until 2024, has announced that he won’t seek re-election. He mentioned, “I’ve spent the last 25 years in some form of public service, and by the end of my next term I’ll be in my mid-80s. Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders. They’re the ones who need to make the decisions that will shape the world we live in.”

He addressed the pressing challenges the nation faces, such as rising national debt, climate change, and the threats posed by authoritarianism from Russia and China, critiquing both President Biden and former President Trump for not adequately addressing these issues.

Expressing gratitude, he added, “It has been an honor to serve Utah and the nation, and I am grateful for the opportunity.”
