DSA reacts strongly to Zohran Mamdani and Bernie Sanders endorsements in NY-10 race

Things are heating up!

In a surprising turn, Zoran Mamdani, the de facto leader of a radical socialist group in New York City, faced backlash for endorsing City Comptroller Brad Lander’s congressional run over his far-left colleague, Alexa Aviles.

Lander officially launched his campaign on Wednesday for the seat held by Rep. Dan Goldman in New York’s 10th Congressional District, a position that Aviles, a left-leaning City Council member, has been considering.

Both Mamdani and Aviles are aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

One group member voiced frustration, saying, “Zoran’s crazy maneuver and DSA’s complete failure,” sharing their thoughts on social media.

Another member pointed out that it’s puzzling. “Zoran, a DSA member, is choosing Lander, who isn’t part of the DSA, over Aviles, who is.”

David Desiree, a member of NYC-DSA’s leadership, expressed disappointment in Mamdani for backing Lander.

“I’m really disappointed that Zoran endorsed Lander and overlooked the organization that played a big role in his election,” Desiree stated.

Interestingly, some noted Lander received backing from prominent figures like Bernie Sanders, highlighting the complexity of the situation.

One discontented DSA member didn’t hold back, stating, “Brad Lander is just not the one.”

Meanwhile, Aviles had been rumored to challenge Goldman in the primary for that Manhattan seat, yet she hadn’t confirmed her candidacy.

After Lander’s announcement, she chose to step back. “I’ve had immense support from my community urging me to run, but after some discussions with my family, I realized I have too much to focus on back home in Brooklyn and at City Hall,” she explained.

Feeling grateful, she thanked her comrades at NYC-DSA and mentioned, “The fight to safeguard our beautiful city has just started.”

Lander had previously shown interest in a role within Mamdani’s administration, especially after supportive poll results during the recent Democratic mayoral primary. However, following some disagreements with Mamdani, Lander turned his focus toward Congress, which some see as a fallback option given the dynamics at play.

This development might create challenges for Mamdani, who is trying to unite a diverse coalition of moderate, progressive, and socialist Democrats.

Additionally, the left-leaning congressman from Queens previously faced off against fellow DSA member Chi Ose, who ultimately stepped back from a brief campaign for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to secure the Brooklyn borough seat.
