Disney Enters Partnership with OpenAI to License Characters

Disney has recently finalized a deal with OpenAI Ranch, allowing the use of its well-known characters for the Sola Video program.

On Thursday, the two companies revealed that the three-year agreement encompasses 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars, though it does not cover audio content.

As part of the deal, Disney will also become a significant client of OpenAI. They plan to utilize its APIs to develop new products and experiences, particularly for Disney+, and intend to implement ChatGPT for their staff,” stated Disney in their announcement.

Furthermore, Disney will make a sizable equity investment of $1 billion in OpenAI.

Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed in a statement that “technological innovation keeps reshaping entertainment, offering fresh methods to craft and share captivating stories.”

He remarked on the current, rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, referring to this as a pivotal moment for the industry. He emphasized their intent to responsibly enhance storytelling through generative AI while safeguarding the creators involved.

Exciting Developments for America’s 250th Anniversary

“This collaboration with OpenAI allows us to blend our iconic narratives and characters with cutting-edge technology, giving fans an unprecedented opportunity to interact with the beloved Disney stories and characters in a unique way,” he added.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman lauded Disney as the “gold standard in storytelling,” expressing hopes that this partnership will set the groundwork for future collaborations between AI and creative sectors.

In accordance with this license, viewers will have access to a curated series of Sora-generated videos via Disney+. Both OpenAI and Disney aim to harness OpenAI’s model to create new experiences for Disney+ subscribers, as outlined in the announcement.

Disney anticipates releasing new content in early 2026.
