A woman from Bakersfield recently welcomed a baby in what many are calling a “miraculous” event. She discovered she was pregnant just before undergoing surgery to remove a massive 22-pound ovarian tumor.
Doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles labeled the situation as a “medical miracle.” Suze Lopez found out she was pregnant when she took a required pregnancy test prior to her surgery.
Lopez, who works as a nurse, mentioned that she often dealt with irregular periods and abdominal discomfort, and honestly, she had almost given up hope after 17 years of trying for a second child.
A few days after the test, Lopez experienced abdominal pain, prompting her and her husband, Andrew, to go to Cedars where Dr. John Ozimek, the director of labor and delivery, and his team conducted tests. They found out she had a rare abdominal ectopic pregnancy.
Dr. Ozimek explained they discovered “an almost full-term baby boy in a small space in the abdomen near the liver, with his butt resting on the uterus.” He noted that it’s quite unusual for a pregnancy to advance outside the womb for such a long duration.
About 30 specialists were present during the operation, witnessing as the doctors moved the cyst aside to quickly facilitate the baby’s delivery, after which he was handed over to the neonatal intensive care unit staff.
After Ryu was born, Lopez began to bleed, but anesthetist Dr. Michael Sanchez had prepared for such an event and had a machine ready to pump 11 units of blood into her. Fortunately, both mother and baby are doing well post-surgery.
The baby boy, named Ryu Lopez, weighed 8 pounds at birth and fortunately faced few health issues. Lopez is now focusing on her recovery post-surgery so she can spend time with her son.
Andrew reflected on the situation, calling Ryu and Suze his “miracles,” stating that Suze is a “God-given” blessing. He believes this baby will illustrate to the world that “miracles do happen.”
