Former Michigan Coach Sherrone Moore Scheduled for Arraignment on Friday

Sherone Moore, the former head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, was fired on Wednesday due to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. He has since been arrested as part of an assault investigation and is set to be arraigned on Friday in Pittsfield Township, according to ESPN.

ESPN’s Dan Wetzel reported the details of Moore’s upcoming arraignment on Thursday afternoon.

Currently, police have not disclosed any formal charges against Moore, only stating that he is “under investigation” related to the assault case.

Moore, who is 39 years old, was taken into custody on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. and booked at the Washtenaw County Jail. Specific charges remain undisclosed.

Pittsfield Township police reported that officers were dispatched to investigate an alleged assault at 4:10 p.m. They confirmed they had apprehended a suspect but did not divulge his identity.

A statement from the Pittsfield County Police indicated that “this incident does not appear to be random” and assured that there seems to be no ongoing threat to the community. Moore is currently being held in jail while charges are reviewed by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor. The investigation is still underway.

Notably, the report of the assault came about thirty minutes before Michigan’s athletic director, Ward Manuel, announced Moore’s dismissal.

As news of the arraignment emerged, police clarified that they have no intention of dropping the charges against the former coach.

Moore joined Michigan in 2018 as the tight ends coach and was promoted to associate offensive coordinator in 2021. He became the full-time offensive coordinator in 2023, a year that saw the program embroiled in a sign-stealing scandal. During this time, Moore held the head coaching position while Jim Harbaugh was suspended for three games due to the situation.

In his initial year as head coach, the Wolverines finished with an 8-5 record, highlighted by an exciting win over Ohio State and a bowl victory against Alabama.

In his first full season, the team achieved a 9-3 record. However, Moore faced a two-game suspension in 2025 linked to the sign-stealing controversy.

Biff Poggi will step in as the interim head coach at the University of Michigan until a new head coach is appointed.
