In October, The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced that benefits will see an increase next year. This adjustment stems from the annual cost of living adjustment (COLA) and affects payments for retirees, survivors, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Every year, the SSA assesses the COLA to determine how much benefits will rise, which is meant to counteract inflation. This ensures that recipients maintain their purchasing power.
The COLA is linked to the yearly changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage and Office Workers (CPI-W). So, as inflation goes up, the COLA does too. The changes will officially start in January 2026, but some beneficiaries might receive their initial increased payments as soon as December. Here’s what you should know about the new amounts and the order of payments.
What will your Social Security payment look like in 2026?
The COLA calculation looks at CPI-W data from the third quarter of the previous year compared to the same period this year (July, August, and September). Based on this method, the 2026 COLA is set at 2.8%, meaning your Social Security and SSI benefits will rise by that amount.
Different individuals will receive varying amounts, but the SSA provides average estimates. For the 2.8% increase, the anticipated monthly payment amounts for 2026 are:
- All retired employees: $2,071
- Surviving spouse and two children: $3,898
- Elderly widow (single): $1,919
- Disabled workers with a spouse and one or more children: $2,937
- All disabled workers: $1,630
For SSI, the maximum monthly payment for individuals is $994. Couples who both qualify can receive $1,491. To estimate your benefit for 2026, you can just add 2.8% to your current amount. The SSA plans to distribute an official notice with precise figures in late November or December.
Who will see the first benefits from the Social Security COLA increase?
The COLA boost will impact benefits starting in January 2026; however, some people will notice increased amounts in December.
According to the SSA’s official payment schedule, SSI payments are generally made on the 1st of each month. But if that date falls on a weekend or holiday, payments will be made on the preceding business day.
Since January 1st is a federal holiday, the January SSI payments will be issued on Wednesday, December 31st. Here’s the timeline for the first COLA-adjusted payments:
- Wednesday, December 31st: SSI payments for January 2026
- Friday, January 2nd: Benefits for individuals receiving payments since before May 1997
- Wednesday, January 14th: For birthdays from the 1st to the 10th
- Wednesday, January 21st: For those whose birthday falls between the 11th and 20th
- Wednesday, January 28th: For birthdays from the 21st to the end of the month
- Friday, January 30th: SSI benefits issued for February 2026
