Jemele Hill believes that Sherone Moore may never return to coaching college football again.
In a recent discussion, the Atlantic writer and former ESPN personality cautioned against comparing Moore’s firing from Michigan with the situations of Mel Tucker and Ime Udoka, both of whom faced serious allegations. Moore was dismissed over claims of an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member.
“Sure, I think Sherrone Moore isn’t exactly my favorite, but let’s not hastily group his case with Mel Tucker and Ime Udoka as some kind of condemnation of black male coaches,” she stated in a thread post on Thursday. “Remember names like Hugh Freeze, Bobby Petrino, Rick Pitino, and Mike Price.”
She pointed out that there’s a stark difference in who typically gets another shot at being a head coach. “You can often predict who gets that second chance,” she remarked.
Mel Tucker found himself in hot water at Michigan State University after allegations of sexual harassment surfaced, while Udoka, now coaching the NBA’s Rockets, was let go by the Celtics after being involved in an affair with a subordinate.
On the other hand, Freeze, Petrino, Pitino, and Price all resigned from high-profile NCAA positions due to scandals that often included issues like infidelity and misconduct, yet they managed to secure new roles elsewhere in college sports.
What’s interesting to note is that while all these individuals are white, the circumstances surrounding Moore are notably more serious. He allegedly displayed troubling behavior, such as stalking the employee he was involved with and reportedly showing up at her apartment with a knife.
The 39-year-old Moore was let go on Wednesday, which took many by surprise, and was subsequently taken into police custody. As of now, he faces charges that include felony burglary, stalking, and trespassing, as laid out in a criminal complaint released on Friday.
Moore was in his second season as head coach for the Wolverines, and as the team prepares for the Citrus Bowl against Texas on December 31, interim coach Biff Poggi will take the reins. This marks Moore’s eighth year with the staff.
Previously, he was part of Jim Harbaugh’s coaching team, but he moved to the NFL’s Chargers after Harbaugh encountered various scandals of his own, including issues with recruiting violations and sign stealing.
