Grace Community Church in Los Angeles is grieving the loss of Jubilant Sykes, a well-known singer and member of its music ministry, who was tragically found murdered in her home on Monday night.
Sykes, 71, was recognized as a Grammy-nominated artist, often performing at the church where the late John MacArthur served as pastor.
Police responded to a 911 call and discovered Sykes with stab wounds. She was declared dead at the scene, and her son, Micah Sykes, 31, was taken into custody on suspicion of murder. Reports indicate that Micah’s mother informed authorities about her son’s mental health struggles.
Santa Monica Police Lt. Lewis Gilmore remarked that the suspect was compliant during the arrest and that the tragedy unfolded within the family home.
A baritone known for his diverse musical career—including opera, gospel, jazz, and classical genres—Sykes performed at prestigious venues such as the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall. He received acclaim globally and was nominated for a Grammy in 2010 for his contribution to a Leonard Bernstein recording.
According to a statement from Grace Community Church, Sykes was a “beloved brother and long-time valued member.” The church emphasized the importance of coming together during such difficult times to express gratitude for the lives touched by God.
“Jubilant’s name perfectly suited him. His life reflected the joy of someone who had truly experienced God’s mercy,” the church said. “His beautiful baritone voice resonated with many worldwide, but those close to him appreciated something deeper—a humble faith and a longing for the beauty of Christ in everything He created.”
Having first sung with Grace Community in 1978, he was seen as a gift who brought audiences to moments of deep reflection through his performances.
“Whether in front of a large crowd singing opera or leading hymns within the church, his sincerity shone through. He believed his voice was a divine gift meant for God’s glory and for uplifting others,” the statement highlighted.
“Above all, Jubilant will be remembered as a dear brother, known for his kindness, warmth, and genuine love for the Word of God. He worshiped with us, prayed with us, and shared in the joy of our fellowship. Many here will recollect those moments when his extraordinary voice lifted us towards heaven—not as a performance, but as a heartfelt offering.”
