RNC Accuses Media of Distorting Gruters’ Statements
The Republican National Committee (RNC) is claiming that recent comments made by RNC Chairman Joe Gruters have been misrepresented by both the media and Democrats.
Andrew Egger, the White House correspondent for Bulwark, authored an article detailing various remarks Gruters made regarding the Republican Party’s chances in the 2026 midterm elections. Egger noted several quotes, including one where Gruters stated, “It’s no secret. No sugar coating. It is an impending and unresolved disaster that is upon us.”
Egger’s piece also brought attention to another comment where Gruters expressed, “We are almost certainly facing defeat.” He warned that Republicans might lose even harder than expected. These remarks were made during radio interviews on shows such as SiriusXM Patriots with Mike Slater and WABC’s Cats & Cosby.
In his article, Egger reflected on Gruters’ bleak assessment: “Such a pessimistic outlook on the Republican Party’s midterm chances is the kind of thing you’d expect from disgruntled Republicans outside the MAGA camp.”
He went on to remark that Gruters’ comments were surprisingly low-energy given the Republican Party’s supposed confidence heading into the elections.
RNC Research, through its Twitter account, criticized the reporting, questioning, “How much does Harvard charge for this? [days] How to learn how to report nonsense?” They also included longer quotes from Gruters that apparently contradicted the more negative statements highlighted by Egger.
In a somewhat heated exchange on social media, Gruters responded to the criticism by noting that while he believes in their chances for the midterms, historical patterns suggest a tough battle: “The party in power has only won a midterm election three times in the last century.” He reaffirmed his belief that ultimately, “We will win in 2026.”
Democrats capitalized on Gruters’ admissions, releasing a graphic quoting him on “almost certain defeat.” This was further shared widely across platforms.
RNC spokeswoman Kiersten Pels weighed in, arguing that Egger’s piece contained blatant inaccuracies and accusing Bulwark of misrepresenting facts to push a narrative. She claimed that had the publication reached out for comment, this situation could have been avoided.
Egger responded to the criticism by accusing the RNC of removing recordings of Gruters’ comments from their Soundcloud after the story was published. He highlighted this contradiction in a follow-up post.
The back-and-forth exemplifies the tense atmosphere as the midterms approach, with the RNC known for being closely aligned with Trump’s ideologies while facing challenging political winds ahead.
Historically, the party in power tends to struggle during midterm elections, and recent trends suggest this could very well be the case again.
