Ryan Clark Critiques Colts’ Decision to Sign Philip Rivers

Ryan Clark won’t be rooting for Philip Rivers in his upcoming game against the Colts. On ESPN’s “First Take,” he expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Colts’ choice to sign Rivers, a 44-year-old retired quarterback, to their practice squad. Apparently, the plan is for him to play in the crucial match against the Seahawks, where the team is vying for a playoff position.

Clark labeled the decision as utterly “irresponsible.” He compared Rivers’ situation to Michael Jordan’s return to basketball after a three-year break, arguing that they are not comparable. “This is Philip Rivers we’re talking about. He’s not been in the game—he’s been coaching high school football for years before considering this comeback against the Seahawks. It’s a whole different ballgame,” Clark stated. “If you’re going after Michael Vick, you better be sure to watch your back.”

In the previous week, a game against the Jaguars left the Colts in a bind. Daniel Jones suffered a non-contact Achilles injury, and rookie Riley Leonard also sustained a knee injury. To complicate matters, backup QB Anthony Richardson remains on injured reserve due to a fractured orbit.

Leonard might be fit for Sunday, but head coach Shane Steichen has yet to reveal who will start. “I’ve seen Riley Leonard compete effectively last year,” Clark added. “He’s been actively preparing to be an NFL quarterback, unlike Rivers. While Rivers had a strong career—maybe not first-ballot Hall of Fame worthy—I would hate to be on the field against him if he were to perform well.”

Clark went further, saying, “No matter what Rivers thinks his defense can handle, he shouldn’t be starting this game.”

If Rivers performs well, Clark mentioned, he wouldn’t backtrack on his critique; the Colts’ decision remains mistaken. Indianapolis enters Week 14 with urgency, having lost three straight games and needing every win to remain in playoff contention. Their final matches will include tough opponents like the 49ers, Jaguars, and Texans.
