Gottheimer Discusses ACA Subsidies on CNN
During a recent segment on “CNN News Central,” Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) expressed concerns that failing to pass a bill to extend ACA subsidies would not mark the end of the Affordable Care Act, but rather, the start of increased challenges in making healthcare more affordable for individuals.
Co-host Sarah Sidner inquired whether this timeline suggested a decline for Obamacare. In response, Gottheimer clarified, “No, the real issue here is that we’re at risk of making healthcare costs even higher for families. If there’s a viable plan to help reduce premiums and extend tax credits to prevent a 175% hike come January, we are definitely open to discussion.” He noted that the urgency of the situation has been evident for months, stating that the goal was to make healthcare more accessible and affordable.
He pointed out the frustration stemming from the far right’s refusal to engage in discussions on affordability, emphasizing the need for collaborative solutions. Gottheimer mentioned that 38 members from both parties have supported this initiative, and noted that many of his Senate colleagues agree that it’s a step in the right direction. He expressed a desire to vote on this soon, aiming for families to enjoy lower premiums by the holiday season. He also highlighted the broader financial strains people face, like rising electricity and food costs, indicating that making healthcare affordable is crucial for improving overall quality of life.
