Victor Wembanyama takes a jab at Nikola Jokic while evaluating who is the top player in the NBA.

Victor Wembanayama has some strong opinions about who he considers the best player in the NBA.

And no, it’s not Nikola Jokic, a three-time MVP.

In a recent ESPN interview, Wembanayama mentioned, “I think Jokic is the best offensive player. But I don’t think he’s the best overall player.” This was just before the Spurs’ semifinal game in the NBA Cup against Oklahoma City in Las Vegas, where he’s expected to make his return after being sidelined.

Wembanayama, who hasn’t played since November 14 due to a calf injury, pointed to two notable MVPs—Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Bucks and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Thunder—as the contenders, ranking ahead of Jokic for overall talent. He described Jokic as an impressive all-around player but favored the performances of the others.

Being 7-foot-4, Wembanayama himself is also seen as a potential frontrunner upon his return.

“I can’t say for sure, but I think it’s a contest between Giannis and Shai,” Wembanayama stated. “I believe I’ll be in that mix when I’m back on the court.”

Gilgeous-Alexander earned MVP honors for the first time last season, guiding OKC to an NBA championship. Meanwhile, Antetokounmpo clinched the award in 2019 and 2020, leading Milwaukee to a title in 2021.

Jokic, who secured a championship with the Nuggets in 2023, averaged an impressive 29.5 points, led the league in rebounds with 12.3, and dished out 10.9 assists per game, achieving a triple-double for the second straight season.

At just 21 years old, Wembanayama has participated in only 12 games this season but is already achieving career highs with 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.6 blocks per game.

The Spurs (17-7) and Nuggets (18-6) won’t face each other again until March 12, as Wembanayama missed the initial match on November 28 due to his injury.
