Cabinet Spouses Share Their Experiences in the Trump Administration

While many Americans are aware of who supports President Donald Trump, fewer know about the key figures standing behind his Cabinet members. Recently, several wives of senior officials in the Trump administration have opened up about their unique experiences and adjustments to this prominent role.

Cheryl Hines, married to Trump’s Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, reflected on these dynamics, noting, “It’s interesting to see how decisions are made internally and how much can be done and accomplished.” She joined others, including Kathryn Burgum, wife of Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who expressed feelings of cohesion within the administration, calling it a big team led by a courageous leader capable of quick decisions.

Burgum described the pace of the Trump administration as unprecedented, even in comparison to her time as first lady of North Dakota. She characterized the atmosphere as both “entrepreneurial” and “patriotic.”

Jennifer Hegseth, whose husband serves as Secretary of the Army, mentioned the often-overlooked dedication of public servants. She emphasized, “He does this only because he cares about our military and our country.” For her, the sense of commitment felt prevalent among the spouses, revealing that some found the transition to public service roles somewhat jarring.

Alison Lutnick, wife of Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, shared a surprising moment: she discovered her husband would be joining the Cabinet while watching television. “I found out about it when I saw his picture on the TV screen in the kitchen,” she said, reflecting on how quickly life had changed.

Marlo Greer, whose partner works at the U.S. Trade Representative’s office, noted small adjustments in daily routine, mentioning how her husband can no longer help with school drop-offs and pick-ups. Yet, she stated how busy life has become, adding, “But we love being a part of all of these things and feel like what my husband is doing is making a difference and really helping Americans.”

Robin Turner, married to Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner, described their relationship as being faith-driven, with her husband often acting as a spiritual leader among Cabinet members. She shared, “If God comes first, then each other, then our families, and if all of those things are strong, then everything else will be too.”

Finally, Janet Rubio, spouse of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, noted her familiarity with political life from her husband’s earlier Senate role but was still taken aback by the close-knit nature of the Cabinet, which, she said, was reassuring for her.
