Nuclear Energy: A Symbol of Unity and Hope

Just over a year ago, headlines were buzzing about the reopening of the Three Mile Island Unit 1 as the Crane Clean Energy Center. This site, which once embodied the future of the nuclear industry, now stands again as a beacon of hope, optimism, and a shared commitment to a cleaner energy future.

For many of us in the nuclear industry, especially the younger professionals, this moment illustrated what can happen when we unite. From union members to business leaders, and even social media, there was a collective celebration around the reopening news. In an often divided society, this was genuinely uplifting—a moment of shared pride and purpose.

As we look toward 2025, nuclear energy is now a hot topic, driven by optimism and innovation. Public backing for nuclear energy has surged, with approximately 60% of Americans in favor of its expansion. Major companies that defined the childhood of Generation Z, like Meta and Google, are now collaborating with nuclear energy producers to power their data centers. For our generation, it’s not just about electricity; it’s about securing a future where clean energy fuels our aspirations and supports our communities.

Growing up, it often felt like politics revolved around two major parties locked in binary choices. However, nuclear energy has emerged as a common ground, appealing across political lines. Both the Biden and Trump administrations are pushing for policies that strengthen nuclear power’s role in the U.S. energy landscape. This is pretty remarkable when you think about it—it’s one of the few topics that brings bipartisan support.

For us, this bipartisan spirit symbolizes real progress, not just politics. We understand that how well America provides reliable, emissions-free energy will shape the world we will lead in the future.

Now, it’s really up to all of us to seize this unique opportunity and harness nuclear energy’s potential to reshape the energy conversation in America. Nuclear is more than just a technology; it’s a catalyst for unity, resilience, and innovation. It embodies the aspirations for a cleaner and fairer world.

Nuclear energy doesn’t just generate reliable power—it also offers social benefits. These plants can support systems for producing clean water through desalination and generate essential medical materials for tackling heart disease and providing cancer treatments.

Reflecting on generational milestones, we think about the space race or the breakthroughs of the internet age. Each generation has had major causes that bring people together and move society forward. We believe that for Generation Z, nuclear energy might just be that unifying cause. It offers a reliable, emission-free solution that represents the progress of our time.

We’ve experienced the nuclear sector’s evolution firsthand, particularly during the historic restart of the Three Mile Island nuclear facility in Pennsylvania. After being shut down in 2019 due to financial issues, the closure impacted many families who relied on it for their livelihoods. Yet, as energy demands rose, nuclear energy’s critical role was reaffirmed, leading to its restart exactly five years post-closure.

We’re at the start of our careers, and we truly hope this momentum extends into future generations. Being part of a nuclear renaissance that has become a national movement fills us with pride and purpose.

Regardless of generational labels, clean nuclear energy can serve as a unifying force in an increasingly divided world. The bipartisan support, private investments, and widespread public acceptance show that people are focusing on what works. We simply can’t let this momentum fade. Let’s build on it and champion a future powered by nuclear energy.
