Giants vs. Commanders: Overview, forecast, key aspects to watch in Week 15

A glimpse into the NFL Week 15 game between the Giants and the Commanders at MetLife Stadium:

Key Matchup

Washington’s Rushing Offense vs. Giants’ Defensive Front

Washington’s running game is performing well, sitting at fourth in the league with an average of 136.5 rushing yards per game. Rookie JaCorey Crosskey-Merritt is leading the charge, though Chris Rodriguez Jr. is questionable due to a groin injury.

Quarterback performance is crucial in this scenario. Jaden Daniels is unavailable, but Marcus Mariota managed to rack up 255 rushing yards, averaging 6.5 yards per carry. On the flip side, the Giants are struggling, sitting at 31st in the NFL with a disappointing average of 154.2 rushing yards allowed per game. In their first matchup of the season, Washington ran for 220 yards while the Giants averaged 6.9 yards per carry.

Updates

Potential Return for Abdul Carter

Will Abdul Carter be back in the starting lineup? He has been benched in two of the last three games for failing to meet team protocols, like missing a walkthrough and being late to a meeting. The rookie linebacker has some proving to do, especially since interim head coach Mike Kafka has temporarily suspended him.

“Abdul has learned from that experience and is doing a great job,” Kafka mentioned, noting that Carter showed up early to review game footage. “I think he’s just turning that corner and aiming to improve as a young player.”

Backup Quarterback Situation

Both Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota were top picks in the 2015 draft, but their careers haven’t fully met expectations. Winston won a Heisman Trophy at Florida State, whereas Mariota took home the award from Oregon State. Winston has had some rough starts this season, but he may be one of the league’s best backup quarterbacks. Mariota, filling in for the injured Daniels, hasn’t had much luck this season either, managing only one win in six attempts.

Regression of the Commanders

Last season, the Commanders surprised many by finishing with a 12-5 record, even winning two playoff games before falling to the Eagles in the NFC Championship. However, they’ve now spiraled downwards, losing four straight games by at least 21 points—a first in the NFL in 23 years. This streak doesn’t even include last week’s humiliating 31-0 loss to the Vikings.

“None of that was acceptable,” head coach Dan Quinn expressed after the recent defeats. “It’s both frustrating and embarrassing.”

Adjustment Period for New Coaches

New head coaches generally need time to set their system, which is tough for interim ones who have only days or weeks to prepare. Kafka had the benefit of a bye week, providing a rare opportunity to reassess.

“I was able to communicate with each coordinator about what I saw and what they saw,” Kafka said, highlighting the importance of open communication.

Upcoming Contest

So here’s the big question: If the Giants can’t manage to defeat their own management, who will? Both teams are in the midst of losing streaks, and one has to break. Can we dare hope that the home team, led by Jackson Dart on offense, pulls off a win?
