Heroic Bystander Disarms Gunman During Hanukkah Shooting in Sydney
Disturbing video from a shooting that occurred during a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia, captures a bystander who intervenes to disarm one of the attackers.
The footage shows a man tracking the gunman as he fires at a victim off-camera. The bystander then tackles the gunman, successfully taking away his weapon. He aimed the gun at the shooter, but it failed to fire.
Aussie outlets have identified the brave individual as 43-year-old Ahmed Al Ahmad. His cousin, Mustafa Al Ahmad, shared with Australian News 7 that Ahmed suffered gunshot wounds to his arm and shoulder, injuries he sustained when the second gunman shot at him after he subdued the first.
“He’s definitely a hero. 100 percent a hero. Once he’s on social media, you can see it,” Mustafa expressed in an interview.

Reports suggest that Ahmed is in surgery now and is expected to recover. As the video of his actions spread online, many social media users expressed their admiration and gratitude.
Israeli Leaders Criticize Australia Following Bondi Beach Shooting
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended Ahmed’s bravery in a statement regarding the incident, initially stating that the rescuer was Jewish, before it was clarified that Ahmed is Muslim. “We witnessed the actions of a courageous individual who prevented one of the terrorists from harming an innocent soul,” he said, recognizing Ahmed’s valor.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns also praised Ahmed, calling him a true hero, and noted that many lives were saved due to his swift actions.
The tragedy resulted in at least 11 casualties and left about 28 people hospitalized. One shooter died, while the other is in critical condition.
Authorities confirmed that the shooting was aimed at the Jewish community celebrating the first night of Hanukkah in Bondi Beach. Currently, neither of the shooters has been named.
