Legal Stance of the Trump Administration on Boat Strikes Lacks Credibility

Sen. Warner Critiques Trump Administration’s Stance on Caribbean Attacks

On Sunday, Senator Mark Warner from Virginia expressed concerns regarding the Trump administration’s legal stance on recent attacks against warships in the Caribbean, stating that it doesn’t hold up to scrutiny during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”

A portion of the conversation follows:

Martha Raddatz: Do you advocate for regime change? Are you in favor of removing him? If that’s the case, what actions would you take?

Warner: Look, I believe Maduro is definitely a problematic leader. There are plenty of other tyrants out there, but few are in such a position of force. I genuinely thought Trump wanted to put an end to endless conflicts and avoid making the U.S. the world’s enforcer. Yet, he seems to be escalating tensions here. In the case of Ukraine, there’s a solid democratic alliance opposing President Putin, though Putin seems to be doing quite the opposite. It’s unclear to me what direction he’s heading. I’m worried that deploying troops in Venezuela could lead to disastrous outcomes.

Raddatz: This has certainly complicated the boat attack, particularly the second incident involving survivors. Just to clarify, do you think the vessel targeted was truly a drug ship? Given your position on the Intelligence Committee, are you confident these boats are indeed drug traffickers?

Warner: I am fairly certain that most of these vessels are carrying drugs. They had knowledge of the 11 individuals aboard the boat involved in the September 2nd attack, but there’s uncertainty with many others.

This legal interpretation is what troubles me. It seems excessively broad—doesn’t seem right to equate the presence of drugs on these boats with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards carrying explosives and arms. I believe Congress and the American public deserve to see the footage I viewed of the survivors, how they gestured at the aircraft, and the details of the attack. It’s also crucial to acquire all relevant documentation and post-action reports concerning enforcement orders. The JAG Corps has legal avenues to explore. We need to affirm that too because reaching a conclusion, as some of my colleagues have, that this was an illegal strike feels premature.
