Deadly Attack on Hanukkah Celebrations in Sydney Raises Concerns for Jewish Community
The recent terrorist attack targeting Australian Jews during Hanukkah celebrations in Sydney has heightened concerns for the nation’s small, yet historic Jewish community. This follows a concerning increase in anti-Semitic incidents that emerged after the Hamas attack in Israel on October 7, 2023.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident as a “targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah.” However, critics argue that the Labor government has not responded adequately to the troubling rise in anti-Semitism throughout the country.
Avi Yemini from Rebel News Australia, who has been tracking these attacks, remarked that just days after the Hamas incident, “Islamic extremist mobs are already openly here in Australia.” He described a scene outside the Sydney Opera House, where individuals were, quite alarmingly, chanting “Where are the Jews?” Yemini also noted that synagogues and daycare centers have been firebombed, and warnings have been disregarded, leading him to suggest that last night’s attack in Bondi was sadly predictable and possibly not the last such incident.
Criticism of Government Response to Rising Anti-Semitism
Adding to the frustration, Prime Minister Albanese faced backlash for not addressing the recent attack earlier. Some community members feel a deep sense of vulnerability, considering whether they might need to relocate to Israel for safety. This growing sentiment reflects a significant shift in how some perceive their safety in Australia.
The Jewish community in Australia has been alarmed by the escalating anti-Semitism, describing a climate of “fear and anxiety.” As reported, there has been an alarming increase in incidents. In fact, the Australian Jewish Executive Council (ECAJ) recorded 1,654 anti-Semitic incidents from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025. This was in addition to 2,062 incidents the previous year, indicating a troubling trend.
The report signifies that anti-Semitic actions in Australia are at historically high levels—nearly five times the annual average before October 7, 2023. Although statistics showed a slight decrease from last year’s record numbers, serious incidents like arson against Jewish institutions have exceeded previous records.
Recent Disturbing Incidents
In Melbourne, individuals vandalized the Adas Israel Synagogue while worshipers were present, resulting in injuries and significant damage. Other attacks have occurred as well, with swastikas being spray-painted at various synagogues and properties, and disturbing acts of intimidation reported within the community.
Prime Minister Albanese, in response to inquiries about the government’s measures against anti-Semitism, affirmed that the government takes the issue seriously. However, the specific measures in place have drawn skepticism from many, given the rising tide of incidents that suggest a broader problem.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar expressed concern over the situation during a conversation with Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, suggesting that the safety of the Jewish community could only come from a substantial change in national attitudes. He emphasized that inflammatory language, which incites violence, should not be tolerated.
Calls for action have come from various political figures, including Senator Pauline Hanson, who criticized the government for failing to heed warnings about growing anti-Semitism and the potential for violence. She stressed that all Australians, including the Jewish community, deserve peace and security.
