New Guidelines on Eating Bread for Better Digestion

Perhaps you’ve heard that bread might worsen digestive issues. But recent research suggests there are exceptions. Earlier this fall, British scientists released new dietary recommendations aimed at easing constipation.

According to King’s College London, this research marks the first evidence-based dietary guidelines for adults struggling with chronic constipation. Surprisingly, the main recommendations include kiwi, mineral water, and—wait for it—rye bread.

Eirini Dimidi, a study author, explained in an October news release that they found insufficient evidence supporting the effectiveness of fiber for constipation relief. Instead, the study introduced various new dietary strategies to help patients.

The researchers emphasized the need for more high-quality trials to clarify what really helps or hinders digestive health. Dr. Roshni Raj, a gastroenterologist from New York City who wasn’t part of the research, noted that rye bread’s high fiber content distinguishes it from other types. She stated, “In this study, we compared rye bread and white bread, and only rye bread had an effect on constipation.” White bread, as it turns out, has low fiber levels and refined flour, which can actually worsen constipation.

Raj pointed out that rye contains both soluble and insoluble fiber, both crucial for improving stool consistency and increasing gut bulk.

The findings also suggested that rye could beneficially affect energy production, immune health, and cognitive function due to its rich nutrient profile, including iron, magnesium, zinc, and B vitamins.

However, Raj cautioned that anyone considering adding rye bread should do so gradually to avoid bloating. “There are many high-fiber foods besides rye bread. A varied diet is important for getting not only fiber but also other nutrients,” she added. Increasing water intake can also assist with constipation.

Debra Muth, a naturopathic doctor from Wisconsin, stressed that rye stabilizes blood sugar levels, prolongs feelings of fullness, and nurtures the gut microbiome. She noted that much of the bread consumed today is made with refined flours that have had fiber removed, which can exacerbate constipation.

She mentioned, “Rye is different. It’s high in fiber, has a low glycemic index, and is much gentler on the gut. It actually supports digestive motility rather than inhibiting it.”

If you’re interested in adding rye bread to your meals, consider opting for rye toast. However, ensure you’re getting real rye bread made with rye flour rather than just colored white flour.

To sum it up, constipation is indeed frustrating, but it often signals that something is off in your body. Understanding the root cause is essential for effective treatment.
