Michael Bradley Named Head Coach of Red Bulls
When Juran de Guzman, the head of sports for the Red Bulls, began searching for a new head coach, he had certain criteria in mind. Ultimately, one name stood out as the perfect fit for the club.
That name? Michael Bradley.
The U.S. Men’s National Team legend and New Jersey native is set to take on the role of head coach after successfully leading the Red Bulls’ development team to the MLS Next Pro Championship last October.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled about the chance to coach this club,” Bradley shared with the media. “This place means so much to me. It’s home. I started my playing career here… It’s a truly special opportunity, and I can’t wait to get started.”
De Guzman had a list of candidates he evaluated after parting ways with Sandro Schwartz following the 2025 season. He eventually narrowed it down before ultimately selecting Bradley. It seems that one key aspect De Guzman sought was someone who could truly grasp the intricacies of Major League Soccer.
“I felt it was crucial to identify a coach with strong connections to the league,” de Guzman remarked. “Someone who understands the rules and player dynamics of MLS. Historically, the most successful coaches understood the cultural nuances of the league. Michael brings that experience, having played here, won trophies, and even captained the national team. Those aspects are incredibly valuable.”
Bradley’s vision aligns with what De Guzman has for the first team’s approach moving forward. After taking over Red Bulls II in the middle of the last season—his first head coaching job—Bradley led them to a championship.
In his initial address as head of sports, de Guzman highlighted the efforts of the development team and how they relate to the vision he has for the senior team. Bradley is eager to incorporate that philosophy now that he’s at the helm of the main squad.
“We aim to develop a well-rounded team that knows how to maintain possession effectively,” Bradley explained. “We want to force the opposing team into their half and create scoring opportunities. The more fluid our offense, the better we’ll defend. It ultimately has to work both ways.”
He continued, saying, “We plan to be youthful, offensive, and dynamic—a squad that fans will find exciting to watch.”
Although Bradley’s coaching background is somewhat limited, he has previously assisted his father, renowned American coach Bob Bradley, in Norway, and briefly worked with Jesse Marsh’s staff for the Canadian national team.
Still, De Guzman expresses confidence in what he has seen from Bradley in his short time coaching the second team, noting the positive responses to the team’s performance and Bradley’s everyday demeanor.
“Honestly, it felt like a breath of fresh air,” de Guzman noted.
The pressing question now is whether Bradley can translate this into success for the Red Bulls in 2026. De Guzman has made it clear that he expects the team to reach the playoffs—a goal that will be pursued under Bradley’s leadership.
“The aim is to get back to being a playoff team,” he said. “Michael is driven to win—that’s just who he is. His career reflects that desire. He started coaching just six months ago and is already winning trophies. This is the mindset we want to carry into the New Year.”
“We want to succeed; reaching the playoffs is a significant goal for us, and it’s where Red Bull expects to be.”
