Pelosi Discusses Trump’s Impeachment Viability
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently expressed on USA Today’s “The Excerpt” that she believes President Donald Trump has not engaged in any impeachable conduct during his current term.
During Pelosi’s first term, House Democrats successfully impeached Trump twice. USA Today Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page sought clarity on whether Pelosi would support impeachment again if Democrats regain control of the House.
“I want to ensure I understand your position; impeachment should not be a primary focus for Democrats in the coming years,” Page stated.
“No, what I mean is that unless he oversteps again—well, there’s got to be a valid reason for that. This is a significant historical event,” Pelosi responded. “Our founders anticipated the possibility of a rogue president, which is why they included impeachment in the Constitution. However, they may not have foreseen a Senate lacking the courage to act. There was once bipartisanship in the Senate, but that wasn’t enough.”
On December 18, 2019, House Democrats voted to impeach Trump after Pelosi’s initial hesitance, citing charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. This impeachment stemmed from a scandal involving Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where he allegedly pressured Ukraine to investigate then-Vice President Joe Biden in exchange for military aid.
Then, on January 13, 2021, Pelosi’s House moved to impeach Trump again, this time on charges of “incitement of insurrection” related to the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.
On Thursday, Democratic Congressman Al Green forced a vote for impeachment that included claims of Trump inciting violence against members of his own party who encouraged military personnel to defy unlawful orders. This proposal was tabled with a significant vote of 237 to 140, with 47 Democrats opting for a “present” vote.
Trump suggested on Truth Social that six Democratic congressional members may have committed crimes warranting severe penalties, though he later clarified on “The Brian Kilmeade Show” that he did not intend to threaten anyone’s life.
Multiple impeachment attempts against Trump initiated by Greene during her second term failed to gain traction.
Additionally, House Democratic leadership released a statement distancing themselves from Greene’s impeachment efforts. They emphasized that initiating impeachment typically requires thorough investigation.
