Highmark Partners with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City
Pittsburgh-based health insurance provider Highmark announced a new partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) this week. Company representatives believe this collaboration will not only support its employees more effectively but also enhance the health outcomes for families over generations.
Blue KC is a prominent not-for-profit health insurance organization in the Kansas City region, while Highmark holds the title of the fifth largest Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan in the United States—also as a not-for-profit entity.
“For Central Pennsylvania, this signifies that Highmark remains a leader in the development of innovative products, services, and solutions for our members and the communities we cater to. And this isn’t restricted to just Central Pennsylvania; it extends across the nation,” stated David Holmberg, CEO of Highmark Health.
He also mentioned, “In healthcare, it’s evident that we’re entering an evolution that demands advanced technology, data analytics, and tools that empower consumers to make informed decisions regarding their health management.”
Highmark services about 7.1 million plan members throughout all 50 states and has around 3,500 employees based in Central Pennsylvania.
The company holds a 20% stake in Penn State Health.
According to Highmark, it is bringing its expertise in areas such as provider engagement, population health, and technology to this partnership. It aims to improve Blue KC’s product offerings and enhance operational efficiencies by providing advanced management capabilities and tools.
Highmark Health experienced an operating loss of $209 million last year. In contrast, it reported sales of $29.4 billion with a net income of $50 million for 2024.
There were also reports of layoffs impacting hundreds of workers.
With this partnership, Blue KC and Highmark will cater to around 8 million members across the country.
“Considering the fast-changing landscape in healthcare, especially the challenges small and medium-sized payers are facing, we’re genuinely excited about the partnership and the opportunity to access Highmark’s capabilities,” said Aaron Birger, a spokesperson for Highmark.
