Australian Government Criticized for Allowing Anti-Semitism to Rise
Israeli parliamentarian Pnina Tamano-Shata expressed strong concerns on Monday regarding the Australian government’s handling of anti-Semitism, particularly in light of recent tragic events. She noted that Australian officials, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, have witnessed a noticeable increase in both anti-Semitic and anti-Israel sentiment over the past few months, yet little has been done to address it.
In her remarks to Fox News Digital, Tamano-Shata emphasized that authorities have received numerous reports of rising anti-Semitism but have seemingly remained inactive. “If governments around the world, especially in Australia, do not take decisive action, they are essentially giving anti-Semites and terrorists a free pass to attack and harm Jews,” she stated.
Tamano-Shata pointed out that the government fails to recognize that anti-Israel sentiment is intertwined with anti-Semitism. She highlighted that there were already attacks happening before the recent incidents, including arson at synagogues and assaults on Israeli-owned establishments. “The signs were evident,” she said.
The gravity of her comments comes after a tragic incident where at least 15 people lost their lives during a shooting at a Hanukkah event in Sydney, specifically at Bondi Beach. This attack has left many individuals hospitalized as well.
Dionne Taylor, the communications manager for the Australian Council on Israeli Jewish Affairs, echoed Tamano-Shata’s sentiments, stating that the government had let the community down. “We had warned that things would escalate, and sadly, it has come to this tragic conclusion,” she remarked.
In the wake of the shooting, Rabbi voices have also criticized the Australian government, suggesting that the attack was an avoidable tragedy rooted in rising anti-Semitic rhetoric. “It all started with hate speech, which escalated to violent actions against our community,” one said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referenced a letter he sent to Albanese earlier this year, criticizing the Australian government’s support for the establishment of a Palestinian state. “Your stance fuels anti-Semitism and emboldens those who threaten Jewish communities in Australia,” he commented.
Netanyahu urged the Australian government to take charge and combat the growing anti-Semitic environment, stating that leadership silence only exacerbates the problem.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog also condemned the lack of action from Australian officials, calling for more robust measures against increasing anti-Semitic acts in society.
In a recent social media statement, Herzog showcased the urgency of addressing this crisis, posting an image that poignantly illustrated the gravity of the situation.
As the calls for action grow louder, many are left hoping for a significant shift in policy and perspective within the Australian government to stem the tide of anti-Semitism.
