Brown University labeled as an easy target following fatal campus shooting

Brown University Shooting: Insights from a Criminal Profiler

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A recent incident at Brown University has raised serious concerns about campus safety. A criminal profiler pointed out that the university acted as a “soft target” for a shooter who opened fire during a late study session on Saturday. The lack of secured doors and minimal surveillance cameras have come under scrutiny after the attacker managed to escape the scene.

According to reports, an unidentified gunman entered an auditorium on campus around 4 p.m., tragically killing two students and injuring nine others. Criminal profiler John Kelly noted, “The university was a soft target. The doors were open and there was no security.” He speculated that the shooter was likely familiar with the area, possibly linked to a college or engineering program. “He seemed organized and comfortable with firearms,” Kelly added.

Following the shooting, it was revealed that few security cameras were present in the building where the tragedy occurred. The FBI subsequently released surveillance footage showing a person of interest in dark clothing near the crime scene. While the individual was questioned and later released, authorities announced they had also let another person go.

Kelly expressed concern over the uncertainty surrounding the shooter’s whereabouts. “They don’t know if he’s far away or still nearby,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of fear among the local residents and students if they don’t apprehend him soon.”

As investigations unfolded, police and federal agents combed a broad area, including neighborhoods near the university. Meanwhile, forensic teams, clad in protective suits, were seen examining trash bins outside the Barth and Hawley building.

The two victims of this senseless act were identified as Ella Cook, a 19-year-old from Alabama, and Muhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a native of Uzbekistan who had recently become a U.S. citizen from Virginia.

With the community still reeling, it remains to be seen how Brown University will address its security protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
