Heisman Winner Fernando Mendoza Attributes His Success to His Faith in God

Fernando Mendoza Wins Heisman Trophy

Indiana’s quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, clinched college football’s prestigious Heisman Trophy on Saturday night. During his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude to God, reflecting on his journey as an often-overlooked athlete who worked tirelessly to achieve his goals. He encouraged young players to pursue their dreams as well.

Mendoza’s impressive performance contributed to Indiana’s remarkable achievement of a 12-0 regular season, marking the first time the team reached the No. 1 ranking and secured their first Big Ten Championship since 1967.

Throughout the season, Mendoza showcased remarkable composure, leading the team to unforgettable comeback victories against formidable opponents like Oregon State, Ohio State, and Penn State.

“I want to thank God for giving me the opportunity to pursue a dream that once seemed a world away,” Mendoza noted during his speech, where he openly shared his faith.

Having transferred from California to Indiana in the offseason, he wasn’t widely recognized as a quarterback, having faced challenges during his high school career in Miami. While he received a scholarship offer from just one major school, other prominent programs, including Alabama and Ohio State, did not show interest.

The 6-foot-5 Mendoza, initially deemed a two-star prospect, managed to lead Cal to bowl eligibility in 2024 before joining coach Curt Cinetti’s system at Indiana.

In his heartfelt acceptance remarks, Mendoza addressed those who feel undervalued, saying, “To all the kids who feel overlooked and undervalued, I want you to know that I was you. The truth is, you don’t need stars, hype, or rankings. All you need is discipline, heart, and people who believe in you. I hope this moment shows you that chasing your dreams is worth it.”

Later, he shared an image on Instagram holding the Heisman Trophy, captioning it with “God did it.” He emphasized that Bible studies among teammates played a significant role in strengthening their bond and connection to faith.

Mendoza consistently highlighted his beliefs in interviews throughout the season. Following the Hoosiers’ victory over Ohio State, he stated in a televised interview, “I want to give all the glory to God. We were never supposed to be in this position, but because of the glory of God, great coaches, great teammates, and everyone around us, we were able to do this.”
