Nigerian Prophet Buries Mother in Luxury Coffin Amidst Persecution

A self-designated Nigerian prophet has buried his mother in an extravagant gold-plated coffin, estimated to cost around $100,000. This event takes place against the backdrop of ongoing persecution faced by Christians in the region, as reported locally.

Jeremiah Fufeyin, who leads the Christ Mercyland Rescue Ministry, held the funeral for his mother, Mama Acetu, in Bayelsa State on Friday. A social media post by Fufeyin showcases a video where a gold-plated coffin spins in a car, while a funeral procession moves through the streets, accompanied by mourners playing drums.

Another video released captures the scene with thousands of individuals lined up on ferries and streets. It also features live music at the ceremony, where women danced and money was tossed by participants.

Mama Acetu, who passed away at the age of 104 in May, was buried several months later in December, as cited by local news outlets.

Though the official cost of the coffin hasn’t been disclosed, its opulent and lightweight design suggests a valuation of about 150 million naira, translating to roughly $100,000. This figure is striking, especially when considered against the average lifetime income in Nigeria.

Fufeyin, known by titles such as Papa, the Indomitable General, and the Dancing Prophet, describes himself as a prophet and philanthropist. On his ministry’s website, he is depicted as someone committed to helping others find solutions and liberating people from life’s burdens.

The months between Mama Acetu’s death and burial starkly coincide with increased violence against Christians in Nigeria, which is reportedly facing some of the highest levels of persecution globally. Over 3,000 Christians have reportedly been killed in the country this year alone.

While Acetu was based in southern Nigeria, most of the violence has been concentrated in the Middle Belt, driven by Islamic extremists from the northern states governed by Sharia law. The severity of the situation, along with suspicions of government complicity, has sparked a response from members of the Trump administration and U.S. lawmakers, who have contemplated imposing economic sanctions.

The Christ Mercyland Rescue Ministry has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the funeral.
