DJ Lagway’s time with the Florida Gators seems to be winding down. He announced on Monday that he’s planning to enter the transfer portal soon. In a statement he shared on Instagram, Lagway expressed gratitude towards his friends, family, coaches, and teammates for their support throughout his Gators career.
“After much prayer, reflection, and careful thought, I have decided to enter the transfer portal,” Lagway mentioned. This Texas native was a highly regarded recruit, having been named the 2023 MaxPreps National Player of the Year and also Mr. Texas Football. He had multiple options, but ultimately chose the Gators over schools like Baylor, Texas A&M, USC, and Clemson.
Lagway’s journey has been hindered by injuries since he joined the team. In 2025, he logged 2,264 passing yards and threw 16 touchdown passes. However, he faced several health challenges, missing a large portion of the offseason due to core surgery, issues with his pitching arm, and a strained calf. There were also hamstring problems in 2024.
Billy Napier was the head coach when Lagway committed to Florida, but he was let go during the 2025 season. John Sumrall replaced him, arriving from Tulane. Lagway had a promising financial future ahead, set to earn over $3 million in 2026 through various name, image, and likeness deals. His endorsements included partnerships with Gatorade, Jordan Brand, Mercedes-Benz, Lamborghini Orlando, T-Mobile, and Beats by Dre.
As for his next destination, it’s currently uncertain. The NCAA transfer portal will be open for 10 days starting January 2nd.
