New Jersey Reduces Train Ticket Prices for World Cup
Following some criticism, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill recently announced additional price cuts for train tickets ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Just last week, NJ Transit had already lowered the price of a round-trip ticket from New York Penn Station to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford from $150 to $105.
Now, Sherrill has confirmed that the price will decrease even further to $98, with tickets going on sale soon.
On social media, Sherrill shared the news, stating, “Good news: Before NJ TRANSIT World Cup rail tickets go on sale tonight, @NJTRANSIT is reducing ticket prices to $98 without spending New Jersey taxpayer money.” She expressed gratitude to sponsors like DoorDash, Audible, and DraftKings for their role in making this possible. “We are excited to host world-class events this summer and showcase New Jersey on the global stage,” she added.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation had faced backlash when the initial ticket price of $150 was announced. Critics argued that such high fares would unfairly burden fans traveling from New York City to the stadium. In response, NJ Transit had indicated that financial support from sponsors would help reduce those costs.
A spokesperson for the governor noted, “Governor Sherrill has been clear that FIFA should contribute to transporting fans to World Cup games. That is not the case, so he has directed the New Jersey Department of Transportation to seek private and non-taxpayer funding to significantly reduce fares.” This sentiment highlights a desire to make the World Cup accessible for all, ensuring it’s beneficial for fans and New Jersey residents alike.
Chris Corulli, the CEO of New Jersey Transit, previously justified the original fares, arguing that the transit company’s expenses shouldn’t fall on local commuters. He pointed out, “This is an exciting moment for the state… but we cannot and will not subsidize New Jersey commuter fan travel to games because it’s not fair,” emphasizing that hosting the tournament would cost NJ Transit around $48 million.
Regular train fares between New York Penn Station and MetLife Stadium are typically around $12.90 for a round trip.
In light of the World Cup, parking will be prohibited at MetLife Stadium, and ride-sharing options will be limited. This is likely to increase reliance on NJ Transit for those attending games.
The first match at MetLife Stadium is set for June 13th, where Brazil will face Morocco in the group stage.
