Jets still undecided on starting quarterback following Brady Cook's inconsistent performance

Jets manager Aaron Glenn gave rookie quarterback Brady Cook a nod after his debut on Sunday, but he’s not ready to officially name him the starting QB for the upcoming game against the Saints.

“If we’re talking about who will be our quarterback, I’m going to be straightforward. We need to evaluate things and will keep you all posted as the week goes on,” Glenn mentioned.

Cook, who went undrafted from Missouri, made his first start in a 48-20 defeat to the Jaguars. While he threw three interceptions, there were also some promising moments. He started strong, completing his first six passes and leading a notable touchdown drive early in the game.

“Brady had some good moments, especially in how he came into the game,” Glenn said. “He was 6-for-6 and had a touchdown. But yes, he also had some typical rookie errors. I think he has room to improve.”

Cook had to step up because both Tyrod Taylor (groin) and Justin Fields (knee) were out. Glenn mentioned that their health statuses wouldn’t be clear until late Monday. Even if they were fit to play, he hinted that it might still be worth evaluating Cook further. When asked about this, Glenn acknowledged the idea of starting Cook regardless of Taylor or Fields’ availability.

“I see your point, but I’ll stick to my process. I think you know how I approach these things,” Glenn stated. “I’m going to make sure this unfolds properly, and I’ll have a clearer picture by Wednesday.”

On another note, Glenn also expressed hope to have more information about wide receiver Garrett Wilson’s knee injury by Wednesday. Wilson has been on injured reserve for five games now, and when asked if Wilson might return this season, Glenn replied, “I hope he does. I think everyone is eager to see him play again this year.”

Glenn plans to seek clarification from the league regarding a penalty on Tre Brown, which nullified Isiah Williams’ touchdown punt return. “It was 21-14 at that moment, so it was a pivotal part of the game,” he said. “There was a lot going on at the sidelines, and I just feel that call was somewhat questionable. We’ll see what they say. While I don’t dwell on penalties, some require more understanding.”

Additionally, the Jets have placed safety Isaiah Oliver (knee) on injured reserve, which ends his season. They have signed DB Kaydron Smith to fill the roster spot.
