Australian PM Vows to Strengthen Gun Control Following Terror Attack
The Prime Minister of Australia has pledged to take decisive steps to avert further terrorist incidents in light of a recent tragedy. In response, he is advocating for enhanced gun control measures.
He disclosed that one of the suspects involved in the Bondi Beach massacre had been previously scrutinized for possible ties to a terrorist organization in Sydney.
“What transpired yesterday was a manifestation of pure evil, deeply rooted anti-Semitism, and terrorism,” he stated.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made these remarks after two gunmen unleashed violence at a Jewish celebration in Bondi Beach, resulting in at least 15 fatalities.
He assured the public that the government is fully prepared to implement tougher regulations surrounding gun ownership.
Some of the proposed changes might include limits on the number of firearms an individual can possess and periodic reviews of existing gun permits.
During the attack, both gunmen were shot dead by responding officers. The father, aged 50, succumbed to his injuries, while his son is in custody and receiving medical attention for serious wounds.
Albanese confirmed that security intelligence had been monitoring the younger suspect for half a year in 2019 due to his alleged connections to the Islamic State in Sydney.
“There were assessments made based on his interactions, and at that time, no ongoing threats or intentions of violence were evident,” he explained.
Approximately 25 individuals are receiving treatment at medical facilities, with around ten of them classified as critically injured.
In a remarkable act of bravery, a bystander managed to tackle one of the attackers and wrest their weapon away. The man, identified as Ahmed Al-Ahmed, a father of two and son of Syrian refugees, was later hospitalized due to gunshot injuries sustained during the chaos.
A fundraising campaign initiated for him has successfully raised over $1.9 million.
Albanese remarked, “What happened yesterday will forever alter the perception of Bondi Beach—an iconic location associated with joy and celebration—now stained by this tragedy.”
