Rockets’ Coach Disappointed After Overtime Loss to Nuggets
Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka expressed his frustration following the team’s overtime defeat against the Denver Nuggets. The Rockets lost 128-125, and Udoka made it clear he was not pleased with both the performance of his players and the officiating.
Nuggets star Nikola Jokic had an impressive game, scoring 39 points, alongside 15 rebounds and 10 assists. Udoka later noted some pivotal officiating moments that could have changed the outcome. One instance he pointed out was an off-ball foul on Houston’s Armen Thompson, along with a crucial free throw attempt by Jamal Murray that tied the game late in regulation.
Udoka described the officiating as “ticky-tack,” highlighting a foul call that gave Murray a chance at the free throw line. “We played together tonight; I wasn’t surprised by the effort of the guys,” he said. Yet, he found the game itself inconsistent, stating, “Generally speaking, I think this was the most inappropriate match I’ve seen in a long time.” He felt that the referees could have done better, mentioning the “unenthusiastic” nature of the crew chief’s decisions.
The foul count was nearly equal, with the Rockets called for 25 fouls and the Nuggets for 28. However, the Nuggets were awarded 33 free throw attempts compared to Houston’s 26. Both Jokic and Jonas Valanciunas eventually fouled out of the game.
The final moments of the match were intense, featuring four ties and four lead changes in just 1:40 of regulation. Murray, who ended the game with 35 points, took advantage of the foul by Thompson to help the Nuggets secure the win in overtime. Denver was ahead by seven at one point, but Houston narrowed the gap to just three, thanks to a valiant effort. However, Alperen Sengun, who recorded 33 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds, missed a contested three-pointer that could have shifted the game’s momentum.
Kevin Durant also had a noteworthy performance for the Rockets, contributing 25 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Despite the loss, his efforts marked a bright spot for the team in a challenging match.
