Rubio Bows Out of 2028 Presidential Run for Vance
In a recent statement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has made it clear that he will not pursue the presidency in 2028 if Vice President J.D. Vance opts to run for the Republican nomination.
Rubio expressed his support for Vance during an interview with author Chris Whipple, published by Vanity Fair. He noted, “If J.D. Vance were to run for president, he would be our candidate, and I would be one of the first to support him.”
At 54, Rubio and 41-year-old Vance are viewed as key contenders to take over from President Trump, who cannot run for another term due to the limits of his current position.
This year, Trump hinted at wanting Vance and Rubio to lead the Republican ticket, though he hasn’t been very clear about his preferences. During a recent trip to Asia, he commented, “We have J.D. Obviously, the Vice President is great. Marco is great. I don’t know if anyone can compete with these two. If they form a group, it’s going to be unstoppable.”
Trump, now 79, has also mentioned the idea of possibly circumventing the two-term limit set by the Constitution to run again, while admitting that it’s probably an unrealistic goal.
According to Wiles, Trump enjoys the attention that such speculations bring, but has no plans to violate the 22nd Amendment.
Rubio shared his thoughts as part of a broader profile on Susie Wiles, Trump’s chief of staff. In this profile, Wiles remarked on Vance’s shift from critic to strong supporter of Trump, describing it as somewhat strategic.
Whipple, known for his expertise on White House chiefs of staff, previously authored “The Gatekeepers: How the White House Chiefs of Staff Define Every Presidency.”
Wiles later expressed regret over her participation in the profile, labeling it a “hit piece” that misrepresented her relationships and the Trump administration.
