OpenAI reveals improvements in speed and quality for the ChatGPT image generator

OpenAI has unveiled an update for ChatGPT that significantly boosts the speed of image generation and its ability to follow instructions, according to a recent blog post. The company claims these improvements make it easier to edit AI-generated images more precisely. Previous versions had difficulties adhering to specific instructions and often made unintended modifications.

In the announcement, OpenAI highlighted that this update brings enhanced instruction-following abilities, precise editing options, and up to four times faster generation speeds, which should make image creation and revisions simpler and more user-friendly. They noted that this transition marks a move from just generating novel images to providing high-fidelity visual creation, effectively transforming ChatGPT into a versatile creative tool for everyday tasks.

This update follows shortly after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman issued a “code red” internally, urging improvements to ChatGPT’s user experience. Altman emphasized that there’s still more work to be done to enhance the chatbot’s performance. Reports indicate that the improvements will include answering a broader range of questions, along with gains in speed, reliability, and personalization for users.

As competitors catch up, with Google releasing a new version of its Gemini model that recently outperformed OpenAI in benchmark tests, Altman has indicated that OpenAI will temporarily halt work on other projects, including a personal assistant named Pulse, to concentrate on enhancing ChatGPT. He mentioned that there will be regular conference calls among teams focused on this initiative.

“Our goal is to further enhance ChatGPT’s intuitive and personalized abilities as we work to broaden access globally,” said Nick Turley, who leads ChatGPT, in a post on social media.

While OpenAI is striving for profitability, it currently lags behind its competitors and needs to secure funding to maintain its operations, with discussions about using funds to invest in AI-related projects still ongoing.
